From our friends at Carole Nash: Ensuring full safety throughout the colder months on your motorbike

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

When the cold weather hits, motorcyclists know that they need to make the decision to keep their bike on the road or alternatively put it into hibernation.

Those motorists that decide to ride on through the cold weather should be prepared for what it may bring and in turn keep on top of the maintenance of their bikes. This could include making regular checks on your vehicle, and always referring to the manual when doing so. You should also clean the motorcycle regularly as road salt can seriously affect your bikes braking ability. This is because it attaches itself to any exposed metal, such a bolts, calipers and brakes. Cleaning your bike regularly and stripping and cleaning the brake calipers are required more often in the colder months than in the winter months.

The ABS on your vehicle should also be checked regularly and be fully operational. If your motorbike is chain driven then this should always be properly lubricated and tensioned aptly, especially when there are icy conditions to deal with.

Another way to ensure your safety is to invest in some winter tires; such tires have been created in order to deal with impossible road conditions. The compounds in such tires will heat up quicker in colder climates, meaning you will enjoy a safer ride in the winter months.

Dressing appropriately is another must in the cold and rainy season; motorbike riders don’t have the shielding a car does and therefore need to take extra precautions in order to withstand the colder temperatures. Invest in clothing that is both comfortable and waterproof. You should also wear other layers that will insulate you.

You should always check that all your kit is CE approved, this includes the boots, jacket, gloves and of course the most important thing, the helmet.

When weather conditions are really bad you should most definitely invest in a high visibility vest or jacket. This will allow you to be seen by other motorists on the roadside and is especially useful when the evenings become dark early and it doesn’t get light until later in the mornings. It is also a great way to be noticed in thick fog, heavy rain and snow! It is also important to ensure your also have bike insurance as there is an increase in the risk of having an accident in the winter. Insurance companies will be able to guide you on choosing the policy that best suits your requirements.

Sponsored post: Making Sure you are Visible to Other Road Users

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

The A bike, another invention from Sir Clive Sinclair, is a revolution in the biking world. It is a foldable bike that is light weight and easily portable. This being said it is smaller than other bikes and as such you may be more at risk to injury if you are involved in a cycling accident.

Visibility is Key

Making sure that you are visible to other road users is essential, especially in busy cities like London, Manchester and Leeds. During the winter months when the nights are drawing in earlier and earlier using his visibility vests and bright lights is key to being seen.

You can fit normal bike lights on the A bike as there is plenty of room on the nylon reinforced fibre glass frame to place them. Making sure that you are visible to drivers and other cyclists will help you avoid an accident.

Cycling Accidents

If you are involved in an accident that is serious enough then you may need to seek professional advice from an injury lawyer. With the shocking statistic that one cyclist is killed on Britain’s roads every two and a half days then there is real cause to be cautious on the roads.

If you are involved in an accident on the roads then there are many things that you can do to make sure you get the compensation that you so rightly deserve.

Compensation Claims

Dependant on the type and severity of the accident you may seek to try for medical assistance either in the way of taking yourself to A&E or by ringing an ambulance. Either way if this is documented and you do make a claim for injury compensation you have proof of the accident and injuries sustained.

Whether you are riding you’re a bike during the day or night if you are not visible to the rest of the road users then you may be at risk of being involved in an accident.
