Another place to mount a light...

Postby Sherlock Holmes on Fri Dec 14, 2007 1:03 am

I have made my first additions to my A-bike: 1. I have added a flashing red tail light, and 2. I have added a headlight. I have been riding quite a bit in the dark because of the time of year, and I feel a whole lot safer and more visible now.

I was having some trouble with the photos, so I am sorry if they do not come through well.

The tail light has a quick release switch, so I can take it off before I fold up the bike. It is a little inconvenient, but I think it is well worth the extra few seconds.

The front light presented a bit more of a challenge, but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

It works really well having the small light down there above the wheel, because I can spread the light over the riding surface about ten feet in front of me. This way I have time to react if I see a large hole/bump. The light also still rotates when I turn, just as it would if it were on top of the handlebars.

Folding works quite well with this small of a light as well, because if you put the light right over the wheel, it pretty much fits in the gap between the front post and the gearbox.

Or, what I am doing most of the time, is just turning the light to face out when I fold it, and it gives you that extra half an inch of folding. The light easily moves because it is just attached with the elastic band.

I am contemplating my next modifications...hmm...

I just ordered a new a-bike. (last one in stock at retro36)

I plan to ride at night now and again as well. Can you list a few sites that sell small attachable bike lights? Should I just visiit my local bike store?

Welcome to the A-bike world JazJon! I am thrilled that there are some other Americans jumping atop the A-bike.

I am not sure if you already have found a light or not. However, the light I put on my A-bike is not even actually a bicycle light. I bought it at a local Home Depot. It is made to be a head-lamp, but I just used the elastic band instead to wrap around and attach it to the A-bike. I also could not refuse the red colour which matched the A-bike perfectly. :)

The blinking taillight you can get pretty cheaply at any bike store or Wal-mart/Target. It is definitely worth the price. The only inconvenience is that you can not fold the seat down as much, however, you can just pull off the light when you collapse it.

How have you managed the hills in San Francisco so far?
