chain tensioners

Postby Job on Wed Jun 17, 2009 10:37 pm

When I was checking my chain, I found yet another problem.
On the inside face there are protruding remnants of the injection moulding process:

left tensioner, in between the two screwholes you see the bit sticking out.

Because of this, the face is not flat.
This leads to two things:
1. the bearing is not in plane with the wheel, which causes extra friction.
2. the plastic tensioner itself deforms:

look at the space in between the tensioners.

It 's easy to scrape off the protruding bit with a knife, but I doubt the tensioner will level out again.
So it's probably best to fit new tensioners in my case.

As I wrote in the Amsterdam A-biker post (but it's more appropriate to this topic):
Regarding the chain tensioner:
The drilling of extra holes in between the standard ones is an interesting option that I'm considering as well.
So when I bought the new screws, I also got an extra long set. These are needed if I drill extra holes, cause the nuts won't sit in their recess anymore.

I'm delaying this option because it will weaken the plastic tensioner ring, and I don't have spare ones yet.
Also I'm waiting helpful advice (and hopefully some new parts) from the abike-shop.nl.
If I get a new chain, chances are the length will be different, so no drilling yet!

Interesting enough, this copy of an a-bike (with solid tyres!) has chain tensioners with extra holes, so they allow you to select one of 8 positions instead of one of only 4.

look at the picture 0:15sec into the video:

That would make a big difference!
Only I don't think spares from copy a-bikes will be easy to get.
So still have to make something myself.
