Mid-Gear Freewheel

Post by Toby on Thu Apr 12, 2007 2:31 pm

Had my bike since 5th March 07, lasted five weeks before the teeth got stripped from the central hub. I simply ride it (fast) 3.5 miles a day in
four parts (to the station from home, from the station to work and the reverse on the way home.

Selfridges in London where I bought it replaced it for a 15% charge.

I have to say that I think the problem will happen over and over with normal useage.

Bin Chin and New cross. I collected all the bearings, re-attached the spring and packed the freewheel with really great grease. I had to also fix one the chain as there were frozen links which I think caused the problems.

Any way, once that was all done and re-assembled the original bike is just spinning like a top. Before all this happened, my rear wheel would not spin freely, now it's perfect.

Thanks for your attention. I really need to pick up Korean, Japanese, Cantonese or Mandarin since there is so much happening there.

My bike store owner, said she saw another A-biker in Toronto, so I am not alone.

I hope the greenbiker is enjoying his new A-bike now.
And thank you for the freewheel information, newcross.

I'm sorry to hear your second encounter with unfortunate event, greenbiker. :(

I understand the broken part is freewheel. Please correct me if I'm wrong, 'cos I'm not sure at all. There was an report on it as well. Another weak spot of A-bike... Here is the photo.

If it is a freewheel, it might not be a bad idea to explore alternative made freewheels.

A-bike uses a single-speed freewheel (14T small axis) with 18 clicks per 1 rotation.
One of the most easily available freewheel is ACS. ACS makes a freewheel (14T) with 20 clicks per 1 rotation. More click means less play when pedaling.

Somebody in Japan did install ACS 15T freewheel to give A-bike a bit of boost on speed. 15T freewheel is somewhat rarer than 14T in the market.

My A-bike had another gear failure, just after I repaired a flat. This time its the chainset axle. The spring wire that held the pawls onto the rachet assembly broke and one of the two pawls twisted grinding the gearbox. When I opened the housing about 100 ball bearing poured onto the floor. Spent the night trying to put back together, but there's some major scoring on the parts. I am certainly getting to know how they put this A-Bike together. The good news is my original repair is holding up fine.

Anyhow, the Mayhem courier online tracking says my replacement bike is in Toronto, so should get it today.

Yes, you got it right. Top one is the new version. I have no idea whether this is actually an upgrade or not, but I really hope this is. If so, it's good know A-bike developement team are making constant effort to improve their product.

I'm glad you are back on A-bike. Riding a tripod isn't a bad idea at all. That's one of my A-bike mod. plans!! (I do photography.) :D

Thanks Binch and Newcross.

I can see quite clearly the differences in the cogs. I am assuming the top cog is the new one and the bottom one is the previous design and also is cracked.

The design looks to change the flange on the cog which I think was where the failure started. Hopefully stronger metal as well. No need to skimp here.

Hi newcross

They seem to beg off your Out-Link to reduce their sever traffic.

If anyone hope to see the photo,

_2. attach the URL on the address panel of the Explorer.

A report on Japanese BBS says A-bike's middle gear assembly has been updated. Maybe they are more durable?

There is a image shows both versions, but it's on the same server as the one I refered all the time.... yes, even the image is still there, when we go there through a direct link, we get "403error".... annoying. :?

I just put the address here, hopefully somebody infiltrates the system.

*On the parent directly shows top page of the BBS, which is dedicated for uploading image of "small wheel bicycle". Currently a lot of A-bike mod. images are in there. (they only hold up to 150 posts)

Post no.760 is showing somebody changed A-bike's 14T freewheel to 15T!!!

Yes, that cog is the same that broke on my bike. I screwed it on so that the cog is on the inside and the small flange is on the outside. I have a suspicion that the thin flange can't take the torque so maybe if the cog abuts the axle housing then this might work better. there doesn't seem to be an issue with allignment. How do I post a photo? that would be worth more than me droning on.

Mayhem called to offer me a new bike, which I accepted as I don't know how long my franken-A-bike will hold up.

I drove to work on it today and it was great. The weather has turned balmy up to 20 C from the -18 C last week.

I gave Mayhem my hands on analysis of this fracture; the cog, the breaking off of the axle etc. The drive chain is the heart of bike and should be tested to much higher engineered failure then I experienced.

When I was racing and working on bikes in the 70's. It was a real renaissance period of cycling. Alloys, carbon fibre, multiple gears, bike geometry, mountain bikes etc. were all being experimented with. As you might expect there were lots of unfortunate and sometimes spectacular mishaps. I was in a road race when a cyclist in front of me on a mountain incline snapped his titanium chainset axle. A painful lesson. But look at what we have today. I can buy a bike for under $100 with Shimano gears, quick release and alloy parts that should last for years.

The A-Bike is an important innovation and we are taking it on the road and the community at large. My excursion into it's inner workings has been a great adventure and I am excited that we are at the cutting edge of this transportation technology. :P
